Casey Grimley | Studio Light Set-Up

June 23, 2014 By Staff Writer Leave a Comment

I’m Casey Grimley, I’m a portrait and landscape photographer in Ogden, Utah. I’ve been shooting for just over a year and love playing around with studio lights and different patterns. My model is Kayshia P., the first model that I ever worked with and one of my very favorites. She has been modeling for around 4 years. I shoot with a Nikon D5100 and for this particular shot I used a Nikon 35mm ƒ/1.8 at ƒ/7.1 ISO 100.

THE SET UP:
I had a flash at 1/4 power with a small 6×9 softbox hanging from the ceiling about 18″ above the models head, at about a 45º angle. I had a second flash at full power on a stand directly behind the model’s head pointing slightly up. I had a silver reflector just below the frame to help bounce light up under her chin. There was also a fan to blow her hair.
EDITING:
This was edited in Lightroom 5 with some basic highlight, shadow adjustments, minor skin smoothing, and a bit of saturation to the reds for her hair and blues for her eyes. I added a kiss of red in the highlights in the split toning settings and faded or muted the darks and highlights using one of my presets. I did take it into Photoshop to clean up a few stray hairs.
