The Newest Kickstarter from Spider Holster is for the Spider Light Holster for mirrorless and lightweight professional cameras. I had the opportunity to test this item this week and want to tell you a little bit about why I think this is a great improvement over the full size version.
Lets start with my switch from a Canon 5D MkIII to the Panasonic LUMIX Camera line up. I was using the existing Spider Holster system on my belt, I had shrunk it some to just a pad and metal holster with some parts from Shai – founder and product designer at SpiderHolster.
Overall, the DSLR-sized system was extreme overkill for the size and weight of my newer gear. One of the reasons I switched to Micro 4/3 was to lighten up, and this was still too big. The plate was enormous and looked odd on my Lumix GX8 Camera plus certain lenses could not be put on and off with the lens hood in the traveling position. Next; there was the challenge of equipping for my tripod. The tripod plate had to be mounted to my camera on top of the huge Spider plate, making my nice small camera even larger.
Enter the Spider Light version!
This is compact, easy, lightweight and fits the GX8 camera body perfectly. It even has an adjusting base plate allowing me to fine-tune the placement on the base of the camera and leaves the battery compartment free for access.
The belt clip/holster can go on ANY belt and is smaller and lighter – but still very well made and built of all metal components. The holster slot still locks or unlocks for easy use while in the studio or on a hiking workshop.
My camera still safely faces downward and lens away from the direction I am walking, but is easy to grab quickly and shoot. Lastly, the Spider plate has the Arca Swiss baseplate built right into it! this is genius – I remember seeing a early version of this and thinking wow I hope that that actually gets to market! and now here it is! This new system matched up with the Spider light Hand Strap makes my Micro 4/3 camera super easy and (even more) fun to use.
