The Mansfield SMUG learned some tips about Photoshop!

April 19, 2012 By Nicholas Pappagallo Jr. Leave a Comment

At his month’s meeting for the Mansfield, Ohio SMUG, everyone enjoyed pizza and soda and a presentation on Photoshop tips by SMUG member Kurt Frietchen. Kurt brought his computer from home and hooked up his own monitors, as well as connecting a big screen TV so that everyone could see what he was doing.Kurt talked a lot about using the tools in Photoshop to improve your photos, such as drawing shadows to give flat areas shape and using the cloning tool to touch up your photos.

Some other processes that Kurt noted that he uses often were Dodging and Burning, using the unsharp mask to create contrast in his images, using the black and white option, and adjusting all of the color levels to make his images look the best. Kurt also talked a lot about what he does when he touches up faces in photos. He adjusts colors, especially reds for rosy cheeks, whitening people’s teeth, and removing the veins and redness from the whites in his subject’s eyes. Kurt also passed out a handout to aid his visual presentation so that the attendees could take it home if they would like to practice these tips themselves.
Kurt’s presentation finished with him asking if anyone had questions, which turned into a big group discussion. The group talked a lot about their program preferences, such as using Photoshop, Lightroom, or Aperture. As the roar of voices settled down, it was time for this meeting’s drawing. The winner of the random ticket drawing was Kurt, and he was  awarded a free 1-year membership for a SmugMug Pro account.

Overall, this was a very successful meeting with lots of knowledge and many tips learned. We are all looking forward to next month’s meeting!
