DEVELOPING A LOYAL FOLLOWING THROUGH BLOGS Guest Speaker, Melissa Jill
You’re in an audience of millions and its open mic night. Will you step up? What will happen if you do?
- Some people might like you
- Some might like you enough to come back again
- Some will tell others to come see you
- They’ll remember your stories
- They’ll get to know you
Sounds pretty good for business, doesn’t it? Your mic is your keyboard and your show is your blog. Melissa Jill gave us some tips at our June Smug Mug meeting on how to be successful at getting fans through your blog.
CONNECT
Melissa shared that her first taste of success as a blogger came six months in when she posted her thoughts about a trip to the local Target store. People connected with her story of the 3 item shopping list that turned into a $100+ trip. And then she was able to start to expose (pun intended) them to other things about herself…. Like her creativity and

expertise exhibited in her photography. And they turned into new clients not only because they liked her work, but because they liked her.
CONSISTENCY
Melissa stressed the need to be consistent. There are many orphaned blog spaces in cyberspace (I know I have a few). She suggested committing to blogging 3 to 4 times a week. Keep your news new. Post “late breaking” news – the shoot you did today, the conference you’re attending.
CONTENT
So after the enthusiasm of the first 2 or 3 posts wears off, what do you write about?
Here’s some suggestions:
- Stories about recent shoots
- Personal events
- New products and services
- Testimonials
- Editorials
- Activity in the industry
- Education
- Tips (for photographers or for clients)
Having a specific topic once a week (think AZ Highways Friday Foto) can take some of the pressure off of coming with new ideas from scratch all the time. Linking to other sites like vendors, consultants, venues, etc. builds your SEO (search engine optimization) and your business goodwill.

Is it time for you to introduce yourself to the audience?
